Children’s meet held

IMPHAL, July 30: A one-day state level children’s cultural meet was organized by Manipur Alliance for Child Rights (MACR) under the theme “Understand, Nurture and Ensure the Joyful Childhood” today at Lamyanba Shanglen, Konung Lampak, Imphal.


The cultural meet was attended by Dr Ng Bijoy, Khurai MLA, and K Sanatomba, joint director of social welfare department as the chief guest and president respectively.


About 400 chidren from different districts of the state participated in the cultural meet. The main objective of the meet is to give a cultural space to the chidren to showcase their innate and hidden talents. It also envisages promoting the communal harmony and emotional integrity through cultural exchange amongst different ethnic communities of the state.

Imphal, July 30 2011: Calls for religiously safeguarding rights of the children and protecting them from violent events marked the Children's Cultural Meet 2011 held today at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound under the aegis of Manipur Alliance for Child Right (MACR), Maringlane New Checkon.


Presenting the key-note address MACR convenor K Pradipkumar said every responsible citizen needs to understand rights of the children to prevent exploitation of the young ones by unscrupulous elements of the society.

Reminding that children are the future of the society and they need to be guided in a proper way, he also urged every responsible citizen to contribute their mite in checking the menace of child trafficking and exploitation of children as child labourers or engaging them in hazardous jobs.

Pradipkumar also lamented that many children have been made victims of HIV/AIDS for no fault of theirs and dragged into the quagmire of ongoing armed conflict in the State.

The convenor also stressed on the need for proper counselling of victim children to facilitate them overcome horrendous experiences they were exposed to.

As chief guest of the Meet, Khurai AC MLA Dr Ng Bijoy said every effort should be made to shield the young children from the negative impact of socio-environmental changes which can be achieved only through all round development of Manipur.

Pointing out that children need careful nurturing from the initial stage of conceiving, he cautioned that children cannot be expected to become a responsible citizen of the future if there is absence of cordiality between the parents or brought up in an environment of disputes and chaos.

In addition to strongly advocating framing of a counselling policy by the Government for children who have suffered from violent experiences, the MLA further suggested that education of the children should be based on their liking and interest rather than force them to follow wishes of the parents.

Joint Director of Social Welfare Department K Sanajaoba, who also spoke at the occasion, contended that efforts are being made to work out an effective development programme for the young children.

Children cultural troupes from various districts presented a number of cultural and traditional items in addition to showcasing their talent through staging of entertainment programmes such as dance, recitation, stage plays and fashion parade.
