Financial aid to child victims mooted

IMPHAL, Apr 7: Social We-lfare Director G Satyabati Devi has asserted that offi-cial process is on to provide financial compensation to victims of child trafficking and sexual abuse.
Speaking as the chief guest at the one day State consultation on ‘Children’s Right to protection’, organised by Manipur Alliance for Child Rights at the conference hall of Hotel Imphal today, G Satyabati noted that inspite of efforts of various NGOs acts of violence are being continuously committed against the girl child and adult women.
Under the directive of the Supreme Court juvenile justice courts have been set-up across the country with similar facility also being provided in Manipur, said the Director adding that as a part of rehabilitation and compensatory measures an amount of Rs 70,000 is being extended to victim children of rape and sexual abuse.
Further informing that a total of 82 children had been rescued from unwanted elements while the figure tou- ched the 276 mark in bet-ween 2009 to 2010, and from 2011 till March this year, she confided that registration of cases against child traffickers officially commen- ced in the year 2010-2011.
Till date FIRs were lod-ged against five persons for their involvement in child trafficking cases, maintain-ed the Director who also in- formed that report of similar cases, if any, from Ukhrul district is being awaited.
Advocating stringent punishment against those involved in child trafficking, she opined that invol- vement of local anti-social elements cannot be ruled out in luring victim children from their parents’ grasps.
A number of resource persons from both Government and non-governmen- tal organisations shared their views at a discussion session on ‘Child trafficking, victim of rape and juve- nile in conflict with law’.
