‘Books must but extra curricular activities vital’

IMPHAL, Sept 27: Discussion on need of extra curricular activities besides education based on bookish knowledge, in order to explore the hidden talents of children, was being discussed on the one-day workshop on, release of a research report on “Situation analysis of children in government school”, organized by the Manipur Alliance for Child Rights at Hotel Nirmala, Imphal.Sorokhaibam Chaoba Singh, chairman, Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur who graced the function as chief guest emphasized that children should be tended and taken care of from their early childhood onwards. They need to be provided proper education so that they could become well educated and give light to all. He also laid stress on the prevailing conditions of Government Schools of the state. According to him, theoretically government schools seem to be ok, with mighty talks and promises, of various plans and schemes, but practically, it is a total failure, he said and asserted that there’s lost of controversies, lack of proper infrastructure, transferring of teachers from one school to another, and one place to another, causing lots of inconvenience to the students in particular.Dr. S. Gyaneswar Singh, Ex-principal, DM College of teachers Education, who was the president of the function, said that, there are two main objectives that we should consider regarding the impartation of education. According to him the fundamental Rights of “Right to Education” is entitled to enjoy for every child. Children should be provided education right from the time of the birth. And the most critical stage for imparting education is 6 years to 14 years. And the earlier years are for pre schooling and we should see to it that this right is not violated whether the educational rights are being provided.He further said that children should be imparted education according to their ability, capability, for every children is unique in his or her own way. And we should respect the uniqueness of every child and treat them accordingly. Quality education should be measured by the achievement of the students, he said. Gyaneswar also held that, for the proper function of the school-proper infrastructure, homeliness, child friendly environment and harmony with nature is essential which is very much lacking in Government schools. Besides these, two main things, unity and honesty are also lacking in Government schools, should go hand in hand with the community of its smooth functioning.Montu Ahanthem, convenor, MACR, in his speech, said that they have taken up the project for the child issues from 23rd December 2005. He further said that to solve the issues concerning child rights, we need to probe deeper into the larger issue like child soldier, child trafficking, child labour, child abuse and its cause, and a remedy and so on. For this, the collective efforts and cooperation of each and every member NGOs, human Rights and Child Rights activist are very much needed.Professor Surjakumar, of ISWAR, institute of social work and research, through various slides displayed before the people assembled, the prevailing situation in the Government schools for the last 5 years. His slide projection showed the inconvenience in the infrastructure of Government school, the deteriorating class room with a few desk and benches, the torn classroom, the toilet facility, depilated, no doors, no proper sanitation, lack of proper drinking water, absence of teachers and children from the school, the open room or kitchen with no walls, where mid day meals for the children are being prepared and so on.In today’s function, two books was release entitled the “situation analysis of children in Government and “status of primary education in the state of Manipur, was also released.
