Advisory Council decides against admission test

IMPHAL, Jan 31: The State Advisory Council which is headed by the Education Minister has decided not to allow schools including Catholic schools to conduct admission test for enrolment of students in pre-primary classes.
A meeting of the council was held in the Education Minister’s office this afternoon.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Education Minister M Okendro stated that the meeting deliberated on making the Right to Education Act inclusive and meaningful in Manipur.
With a view to make the Act meaningful, the meeting decided to appeal to the Catholic School Society not to conduct admission test for enrolment of students to pre-primary classes for this academic year.
As for the coming years, the matter would be decided after a joint consultation with academicians, legal experts and authorities of Catholic schools.
Case is pending in the Court at Delhi too regarding the same issue of admission test, Okendro stated.
The Government would take up necessary steps if anybody dares to challenge the Right to Education Act.
The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has already registered a case in a similar issue.
The Minister appealed to all concerned to respect the Right to Education Act and help in proper implementation of the Act.
Talking about the complaints raised by student bodies regarding tuition fees charged by private schools, the Minister conveyed that a concrete decision would be adopted in the next meeting of the advisory council which would be held next month. Stating that there would be rationalisation of teachers ahead of the forthcoming academic session, he conceded that some schools in Imphal have greater number of teachers than students.
He appealed to teachers to attend their schools even if the schools are located 10-15 Kms away from their homes. He also asked all concerned not to attempt political intervention in the transfer and posting of teachers.
